Description

Product Overview

The Yugoslavian M57 60mm Live Fire Mortar Kit represents a rare opportunity to own and operate a historically significant infantry mortar that spans from World War II lineage through modern military service. This complete kit includes an original Yugoslavian bipod and baseplate, with the option to select either a fully functional unrestored original condition or a fully restored version, allowing collectors and operators to choose between preserved historical patina or refurbished precision.
The tube and cup are newly manufactured by DestructiveDevices.com, engineered to meet our modern performance expectations while faithfully preserving the original M57 design and geometry. The result is a mortar system that seamlessly blends historical authenticity with modern reliability, suitable for both display and live-fire applications.

Historical Significance

The Yugoslavian M57 60mm mortar traces its design heritage to early European light mortar concepts influenced by the French Brandt lineage and U.S. WWII-era developments. Adopted by Yugoslavia during the Cold War, the M57 became a standard light infantry mortar due to its simplicity, portability, and effectiveness.
What sets the M57 apart is its remarkable longevity. Unlike many Cold War-era systems that faded into obsolescence, the M57 has remained relevant well into the 21st century. It continues to be produced and remains in active service with Serbia’s 72nd Brigade for Special Operations and elements of the Ukrainian armed forces, underscoring the durability and tactical relevance of the design. This continued operational use makes the M57 not just a collectible artifact, but a true piece of living military history.

Modern Manufacturing & Materials

While the bipod and baseplate are original Yugoslavian components, the critical pressure-bearing parts are newly manufactured to our modern standards:
  • Barrel: Machined from 4130 chrome-moly cold-drawn seamless steel for strength, durability, and live-fire reliability
  • Cup / Receiver: Machined from a solid 4140 chrome-moly steel
  • Cup Design: Based on the U.S. M2 mortar cup, utilizing standard threads for compatibility and serviceability
These material choices ensure long service life and consistent performance while remaining faithful to the original M57 configuration.

Spotting and ignition charges are sold separately and are not included with the restored or unrestored kit.

Important Notice

This mortar is being sold in kit form, which means it is not being sold as a registered destructive device. This is a stepped transaction, which means you pay for the entire kit upfront and we ship everything to you but the cup (receiver) and the tube (barrel). The cup, which is the firearm receiver, must be shipped to an FFL licensee within your state. This will transfer as a standard Title 1 firearm receiver, no different than a standard rifle, shotgun, or handgun. You will go to your dealer and fill out the standard 4473 over-the-counter firearms transaction record. Once the receiver is in your possession, you will need to fill out and submit a Form 1 (application to make and register an NFA firearm) to the BATFE, requesting permission to make a destructive device. Once you have received the approved Form 1 back from the ATF, you will provide us a copy of the Form 1 for our records, and then the tube/barrel will be shipped directly to you. Engraving services are available if you would like us to engrave your maker information on the cup after your Form 1 has been approved. All NFA rules apply.

The cup screws onto the base of the tube, and you now have a complete, legally registered, destructive device.

The 60mm rounds that are fired out of the M57 use a special 20-gauge shotgun blank to launch the mortar projectile out of the barrel. These 20-gauge blanks are available for purchase on our website here.
