Historical Significance

The Brandt MLE 27/31 mortar, first introduced by the French in the late 1920s and early 1930s, revolutionized infantry warfare with its lightweight, portable design and powerful indirect-fire capability. The MLE 27/31 became the archetype for mortar systems used extensively by militaries around the globe, influencing designs adopted by the United States, Germany, the Soviet Union, and many others throughout World War II and beyond.

Notably, this design allowed armies to quickly and accurately deliver indirect fire, greatly enhancing infantry combat capabilities. The versatility of the Brandt mortar design led to widespread production and adaptation, especially evident in Soviet and German mortar systems of the era, such as the Soviet 82mm mortars and the German 8 cm Granatwerfer 34.
